These are one of those classic recipes. I haven’t tried to make these Gluten free yet, but sometimes you just have to make a couple of quick batches of these. This is one of those recipes handed from friend to friend. This was given to me by my lovely friend Jill, who lives in the thumb of the mitten that is Michigan. It’s a beautiful part of the world, and these are very tasty.


Molasses Cookies

What you’ll need

1 c sugar

3/4 cup shortening

1 egg

4 Tblsp molasses

2 c flour

2 tsp soda

1 tsp cinnamon

Dash of ginger

Dash of cloves


How to.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees farenheit.

Cream the butter and sugar and add to the molasses cooking in a saucepan. allow to simmer but not harden. Be careful not to have the heat too high.  In another bowl – preferably metal – Add all the spices, then a little of the flour, the soda. Make a well and add the eggs (which have been beaten in advance). After these ingredients are mixed, add the molasses mixture. Add the rest of the flour bit by bit mixing in, but not over kneading. Once barely combined – this mixture will be wet – use a tablespoon to grab balls of mixture.

Make the balls round in your hands.  I usually use a little flour on my hands – but this is a little messy. An apron is probably a good call for this recipe.

Roll these in balls, and place spaced evenly on a parchment lined and greased cookie sheet. You can flatten these if you choose, but you don’t have to.

Cook in a 350 degree farenheit (180 degrees celcius) oven that’s been preheated.

The big experiment with these is cooking time – a couple of minutes either way will render these chewy or crispy. This seems to be personal preference. So, make a couple of batches anywhere from 10-14 minutes and you’ll get a variation in the result.
